Of all the woodworking kits I have bought over the years, this is the best collection I have. In saying this, I think it's an excellent woodworking book and DVD for beginners as well as seasoned woodworkers.

Can You Build Your Own Chicken Coop?

I had no idea that thousands of people were building chicken coops in their backyard. But where were they getting their plans? I collected various drawings and ‘do it yourself ideas’ but nothing was very organized. I purchased a few guides, but all were either incomplete or you needed to be a carpenter to understand the steps. Even with my engineering background these plans all left gaps that were tough to fill.
I contacted my friend Jim, and we decided that with his poultry background and my engineerng background that we could design a chicken coop plan for the everyday average person.

Assembling Your Italian Charms Bracelet

For the first timer the charm bracelet may be challenging to put together. It is a simple process and once you get the first charm on the bracelet, things will go quickly. The procedure for putting charms on is the same as the process for removing them. The photos below show a bracelet which already has charms on it and new charms being added, the concept is the same for starter bracelets.

Charm Links Instructions for Starter Bracelets:

Step 1

The charms link together using a loop on the back of the starter bracelet which hooks up to the opening on the charm. Notice that in order to put the new charm on you must expand the starter link outward and press down with your thumb to keep it in place. If it is your first time you may find it easier to use a tool of some type, a nail file or strong object to hold open the link while putting on the charm, another set of hands is sometimes helpful as well.
The left side of the charm will have an opening to link to. The charms are tiny and the opening is small, look carefully, it is a slot only a few millimeters wide.

Step 2

Holding the link open by using pressure from your thumb, slide the charm onto the end from the bottom up. Tilting it at an angle may help to align the links to make it easier to slide onto the starter.
The instructions and photos below may help you in assembling the new bracelet.

Remove Charm Links Instructions

Step 1

Hold the bracelet securely: Using the left hand, hold the bracelet in the palm of your hand. Your index finger and thumb should be free.

Step 2

Secure the other side of the bracelet using your right hand, pull the bracelet outward to expand the links

Step 3

Both hands should be horizontal when pulling outward.

Step 4

Using your left hand press down into the charm area to keep bracelet expanded. If you are making a first time starter bracelet, you will need to use the last link on the right side of the bracelet as a starting point.

Step 5A

Notice that the back of each link has a loop on which to put the charms, and that you can hook them on or off at that area.
Now, using your right hand, slide the charm on the right side over also.

Using your right hand, push the right link toward the bottom to remove it from the link. It will slide downward and then off the link.

Synthetic Diamonds: How to Tell if a Diamond is Real

A diamond is a precious stone that is formed through a combination of intense heat and pressure from deep within the earth. There are many stones that look like diamonds, such as cubic zirconium, moissanite, and crystal. In addition to these, stones that are created in a laboratory under simulated diamond conditions are not true diamonds. And while each of these stones are beautiful and valuable, learning that the stone you thought was a genuine diamond is in fact a fake can be quite a crushing blow.

Believe it or not, there are many people out there, men and women alike, who paid way too much for a giant rock that they were told was an authentic diamond. Without a trained professional eye and special equipment, it is hard to distinguish between real and fake diamonds but there are signs and guides to help you check out the authenticity of the rock.
First of all, you must be familiar with the overall traits and qualities of diamonds. These include the clarity of color of the diamond. There are several quick tests that you can give to a diamond to spot a fake. Turn a diamond upside down and place a paper with printed words underneath it. If you can read the words, the diamond is likely a fake. Breathe onto the diamond and watch how quickly it takes for your breath to disappear. On a real diamond, the fog from your breath should disappear almost instantly. Fake diamonds will stayed fogged up longer. As you look into a diamond, you should see gray reflections. Rainbow colored reflections are an indicator of a fake.
These are some simple tests that can help you quickly spot a fake diamond. They are not guaranteed measures, but they can definitely get you started. If you are purchasing diamond rings from a jeweler, you can also try asking if the diamond is real or if it is composed of any other materials such as cubic zirconium, moissanite, or crystal. An honest jeweler should give you a straight answer. Look for scratches or dents on the diamond. A diamond is extremely durable and should have few to no dents or scratches. A cubic zirconium or other stone won’t hold up as well and may show marks, indicating that it is indeed not a diamond.
If you already have a stone that you want to check for authenticity, you can have it appraised by a professional jeweler, but be sure to find someone who is recognized by the American Society of Appraisers. It is also wise to ask for a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America. Both of these organizations will give you more details about the exact value, characteristics, and specifications of your diamond.

How to Clean Jewelry & Jewelry Storage

Your jewelry is important to you; as with anything that you care about, you must take good care of it. Taking proper care of your jewelry ensures that it not only looks like quality but that it also remains in top quality condition for a long time.

Some basic hints to care for your jewelry include wiping it off after each time you wear it. Using a gentle cloth made of a soft material, such as cotton, will help to remove the natural oils found on your skin that may have transferred onto the jewelry. A polishing cloth or one that is 100 percent cotton is ideal. Any other blend of material, such as polyester or wool contains coarse materials that may scratch your metal. These should be avoided.
For fingerprints or a small amount of dirt, make a mixture of gentle soap and warm water. Soak your jewelry for several minutes and then rinse thoroughly with warm running water. Make sure that your jewelry is completely dry before you store it. You can use a lint-free cloth to dry, buff, and shine your jewelry.
Never use chlorine or bleach on your jewelry, and remove all jewelry if you are cleaning using any product that contains chlorine. The harsh chemical nature of chlorine will cause the metal in your jewelry to break down in such a way that cannot be reversed or repaired. Other substances to avoid include ammonia, acetone, turpentine, and alcohol.
Silver jewelry will most likely require a special cleaner and polish to remove any tarnish. Use only a soft cloth on silver pieces and be sure to rub them gently since silver is highly prone to denting and scratching. Wearing silver jewelry more frequently helps to keep it from tarnishing.
When storing your jewelry, it’s best to keep your pieces separated to avoid scratching. Diamonds can be scratched by other diamonds and should therefore be kept separate from each other. Pearls are very soft and susceptible to scratching. They should be stored in a fabric wrap rather than plastic. Beaded necklaces should be stored flat to avoid stretching. Extremely delicate pieces should be wrapped in jeweler’s tissue paper and kept in separate bags or compartments. If the jewelry came with a bag or box when you purchased it, it is a good idea to store it in the same or similar packaging. Keep your jewelry out of direct sunlight and avoid extreme temperatures.
It is a good idea to remove your jewelry when cleaning or working with any type of chemicals. You should also remove your jewelry when gardening, doing repair work, lifting weights, playing contact sports, swimming, or sitting in a hot tub. Put on your jewelry after applying makeup and hairspray as the chemicals in these substances could harm your jewelry.

Third Party Certificates and Appraisals:

Anjolee works closely with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as well as European
Gemological Laboratory (EGL) USA and the International Gemological Institute (IGI).
Upon request from our customers, we will send loose diamonds to be certified with
the GIA. Diamond certificates are usually issued on larger diamonds that are 1 carat
and above (each diamond). A certificate is usually provide d is for engagement rings
or stud earrings that feature a 1 carat diamond or larger. Items like a diamond tennis
bracelet or a diamond necklace or pair of earrings that are composed of many smaller
diamonds (each diamond less than 1 carat) are examples of when it is not cost effective
to certify so many stones. In such cases the total cost of the certification can end up
being more than the item itself.

If you order a diamond bracelet, diamond earrings, or necklaces with smaller
diamonds (with each diamond less than 1 carat) and would like a third party appraisal,
we recommend using an independent lab such as the EGL or IGI. They can provide
a grading report of the diamonds and a retail value appraisal which can be useful
for insurance purposes.

The 4 C's

Put simply, there are four universally accepted
characteristics that all diamonds are graded by.
They are known as the 4 C's, and they are Cut, Color,
Clarity and Carat weight. It is the combination of these
"4 C's" that determines a diamond's value. By changing
any of the characteristics, you can dramatically affect
the diamond's value, all other factors being equal.

Cut

The cut of a diamond, its roundness, its depth and width, the uniformity
of the facets, all determine a diamond's brilliance. Many gemologists
consider cut the most important diamond characteristic because even
if a diamond has perfect color and clarity, a diamond with a poor cut
will have dulled brilliance.

The width and depth have the greatest effect on how light travels
within the diamond, and how it exits in the form of brilliance.
Too Shallow: Light is lost out the sides causing the diamond to
lose brilliance.
Too Deep: Light escapes out the bottom causing the diamond to
appear dark and dull.

Color

The most important thing to know about color when it comes to diamonds
is, in general, the less color a diamond has, the more valuable it is, all
other factors being equal. Diamonds are found in nature in a wide range
of colors, from completely colorless (the most desirable trait) to slightly
yellow, to brown. So-called "fancy color diamonds" come in more intense
colors, like yellow and blue, but these are not graded on the same scale.

The color grading system for diamonds uses the letters of the alphabet
from D through Z, with "D" being the most colorless and therefore the
rarest and most valuable, and "Z" having the most color within the normal
range, and being the least valuable, all other factors being equal.
A diamond's color is determined by looking at it under controlled lighting
and comparing them to the Gemological Institute of America's color scale,
which is based on a set of diamonds of known color. Here is a diagram
showing how a diamond's color is graded:

Clarity

Another vital grading characteristic in diamonds is their clarity. This refers
to the number, position and size of the inclusions that occur naturally inside
diamonds. The fewer and less obvious the inclusions are, the more valuable
the diamond. Here is an illustration that shows the clarity grading scale that
has been established by the world's foremost authority on diamonds,
the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Contrary to popular belief, higher clarity does not always mean more
beautiful. If the inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, a higher clarity
does not really improve the appearance of a diamond but rather the rarity
and price. A higher clarity is more desirable and valuable, but knowing that
you have selected the right clarity for the right reasons is most important.

Carat

A diamond's weight is measured in what is known as a "Carat", which is
a small unit of measurement equal to 200 milligrams. Carat is not a measure
of a diamond's size, since cutting a diamond to different proportions can
affect its weight. (The word "Karat" is used to express the purity of gold,
and is not used in relation to diamonds.) Here is a diagram that shows the
relative size of various carat weights in a diamond that is cut to the
same proportions:

The most important thing to remember when it comes to a diamond's carat
weight is that it is not the only factor that determines a diamond's value.
In other words, bigger does not necessarily mean better. All 4 C's - Cut,
Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight - must be balanced in order to arrive at
a diamond that fits your budget. None of the 4C's is mutually exclusive,
nor is any one more important than the others.

After you have completed that renovation job you will need some paint.

Who doesn't like ice cream. I reckon it is the most 'bestest' dessert ever invented. We always have a tub in the freezer and it always makes a quick and easy dessert after dinner. Well you have to have a dessert after a meal. That is a known. Why do restaurants always try and sell you a dessert after your meal. Because there is always more profit in desserts. The restaurant can struggle along selling meals and break even but has to sell entrees and desserts for some profit. If you go to a restaurant and order an entree and a main and a dessert followed by coffee and also have a few glasses of wine with your meal, they will love you. You are a perfect customer. Anyway, you can't get away with serving just ice cream in a restaurant unless of course it is for a kids meal. Kids just love it. Have you ever noticed. Don't you wish you could have a real ice cream maker at home so you could have it on tap quickly and easily.

It is fun to take kids to one of those all you can eat buffets and watch them make a bee line for the dessert first. If they have one of those soft serve machine there they love to fill their bowel and just keep going back for more. Don't you wish you could have one of those soft serve machines at home. Soft serve on tap. That would be nice. Not really because there is a lot of work in one of those. Because it is a milk product the machine has to be thoroughly washed out every night to stop bacteria growth. Although I had one of those at home once. At night when it came to dessert time I could duck next door and squirt some soft serve on top of my dessert. Lovely.

Lladró Together Forever Figurine

History

The company was founded in 1953 by three brothers, Juan, José and Vicente Lladró, in the village of Almácera near Valencia. Starting with items such as vases and jugs, it wasn't until 1956 that they started producing the sculptures for which they are now most famous. Enthusiasm for the items produced by the Lladró brothers saw their small workshop expand several times until eventually they moved to Tavernes Blanques in 1958.

1962, the brothers open the Professional Training School at their site in Tavernes Blanques to share their knowledge and experience. It still operates today keeping alive the vision and philosophy of the brothers by imparting it to a new generation.
1969, on October 13, the City of Porcelain is opened by the Spanish Minister for Industry. It took 2 years to build and was designed to provide the best environment that encourages the artistic development of works produced. Currently over 2000 people work here.

A set of Lladró figurines

1970, Lladró begins to use a new material, gres, for its sculptures. It has earthy colours and is used frequently in natural themes.
1973, Lladró buys 50% of the North American company Weil Ceramics & Glass.
1974, the first blue emblem, consisting of a bellflower and ancient chemical symbol, appears on the base to show the origin of the sculpture. The Elite Collection is also launched.
1984, Danielle, Mari Carmen and Juan Vicente Lladró joined the company. One child of each of the founding members. They underwent a long apprenticeship before they were permitted responsibility in the company.
1985, the Collector's Society is formed. The first annual sculpture, called "Little Pals", can fetch several thousand dollars at auction due to the small number of members able to purchase it in the early years.
1986, Lladró forms an alliance with the Mitsui Group creating a subsidiary called Bussan Lladró based in Tokyo
1988, on September 18 in New York the Lladró Museum and Gallery is opened on 57th Street in Manhattan.
1993, Lladró receives the Principe Felipe award for internationalisation.
2001, Lladró Privilege, a new customer loyalty programme, takes over from the Lladró Collectors Society.
2004, Lladró Privilege Gold, a new level of loyalty programme within the Privilege program.

Technique

Lladró figurine called "En sus pensamientos"

The manufacturing ingredients are kept under tight guard. The process is detailed in a number of Lladró publications and is fully on view for tour groups and individuals at the City of Porcelain. Lladró figurines are made out of an original blend of hard-paste porcelain, which gives the products their unique porcelain characteristics. The glaze ingredients also add to the look of the figures and is an industry secret.

Marketing

Lladró figurines are given an additional title in English as well as the Spanish original, however these names are frequently not translations (figurative or literal) but new names that are more likely to appeal to an English speaking audience. An area for some confusion is that the names of the pieces can change throughout their run so the same figurine may end up with several titles.

In an episode of the sitcom Will and Grace (7x12, "Christmas Break"), Will's mother Marilyn (portrayed by Blythe Danner) had a collection of Lladró, her favorite being 'Ouisan, the bashful geisha.' She was described as being priceless; the humour of the episode revolved around the fact that Grace had broken her and was fearful of Marilyn finding out, as she was very precious to her (she declared her desire to discover who had done it and to "pour bleach on something they love").
In The Sopranos, Carmela Soprano boasts about her Lladró figurine in "Everybody Hurts" (4x6). In the episode "Chasing It" (6x16), Carmela breaks the figurine by throwing it at Tony Soprano.
In "The Nanny" (Episode 5x05), Fran's paternal aunt Freida contemplates on whether she may or may not hire Niles as a butler. She decides that she should because she wants someone to dust her Lladró collection. Nonetheless, she pronounces it wrong and makes a smart remark about it to Fran's mother Sylvia.
In Big Love Roman Grant's wife Adaleen has a large Lladró collection.

We would all love to be a successful stand up comedian. They look so smooth up there on stage delivering joke after joke and getting laugh after laugh. They make it look so easy and seem to be so relaxed. Of course there are those who are not so good and even those who completely bomb out on stage. Audiences really aren't nice people when you don't deliver what was promised. So a good stand up comedy routine is worth it's weight in gold.

However, it is not just enough to have a good routine you also have to be able to deliver the material so that you get laughs. That is what you are paid to do and if there are no laughs forthcoming you wont get invited back. So what is it that makes a good comedian. There have been many famous names in the past and a few good ones about now so what is it that they all have to make them so successful. Some are just naturals. They can get up on stage, be as cool and natural as anyone and deliver line after line because they have their own natural style that is funny.

Others struggle on stage. They are never at ease at least not until the laughs start to roll. They have to learn routines and methods and spend a long time trying to get it right. It just does not come easy to them. Wouldn't it be great to be able to just get up there and start talking. Your style is naturally funny and you just have a heap of stuff that is relevant to every situation and is naturally funny. You can get up any time in front of anybody with no preparation and just do it. How good would that be.

There is probably very few of us that could do it that easily. But if we haven't got it we can learn it. There are plenty of courses and schools where you can learn how to be a stand up comedian. Just check their credentials and what they are offering before you spend your cash. Some of the courses out there you can do on line and are less that $100. Well worth it if you are going to learn a good stand up comedy routine. However, this stuff that you learn you don't have to apply as a comedian. If you are a public speaker of any sort some basic stand up comedy skills will you give heaps of confidence on the platform. If you get your audience to crack a smile or even break into a laugh you have got them on your side. Much easier to sell something if they are on your side.

Maybe you just want to be funnier at your local party. If you can get regular laughs your popularity will grow. You will feel more comfortable with people and more relaxed making you easier to get along with. Couldn't hurt where you work too. Crack a joke or two round the water cooler and you will have them eating out of your hand. This stuff could really enhance your lifestyle, make you a more confident person and generally give you a new, better lease on life.

Fun in the Australian Outback

Ayres Rock, Australia is a popular tourist destination as it is really unique and such an unusual place to visit. There are thousands of tourists going there every year by car, bus and by plane. If you want to go take a plane because it is a long way from anywhere. Many tourists make the mistake of thinking that Ayres Rock is at Alice Springs and then find when they get there that they are still 500 Klms. away. They then have to hire a car or take a bus tour to get there.

Car travel is very dangerous in the area and many tourists have come to grief on the long drive. They have lost concentration because of the long, hot boring drive and ended up upside down in the scrub, sometimes dead. There is nothing to see for hour after hour except red sand which soon becomes boring. You should never drive at dusk or early morning there because that is when the wildlife are active. Thousands of kangaroos seem to adopt the road at night as do feral camels and wandering cattle from unfenced cattle ranches. Many a tourist has come unstuck hitting a beast with his car and always coming off second best.

So fly in to Ayres Rock and not Alice Springs. There is a very good airport there which takes all but the largest of planes. However, in the summer time when the heat on the tarmac gets up into the 50's sometimes a departing flight is unable to get started and a aircraft mechanic has to be flown in from Alice Springs causing a delay of several hours. Not much fun for the stranded passengers. And don't do what one young couple on their honeymoon from Europe did. They joked about a gun in their luggage and were refused a flight. As there is only one airline flying out of Ayres Rock they had to hire a car to get to Darwin and home again.

So there you go. The airport there is managed by the resort company as is the whole town. The town is called Yulara and was built by the government to structure the hotel industry into one place just out of the rock. The resort company bought the whole town off the government and now have about five hotels there in various star ratings. There is also a camping and caravan park which is always busy because there are many Australians holidaying in caravans. It is a long way to tow a caravan but some must enjoy it. Every afternoon there is a long queue at the park waiting to book in.

Once you are there safely there is only the rock to see so most people only stay the one day and are off again. Don't do what some tourists have done and wander off into the dessert to explore. Some of the sand hills are 30 feet high and once you are out there you loose all sense of direction. Every now and then someone does wander off with insufficient water or even a hat and are found the next day dead. Even the rock has had it's share of tragedies. There are many plaques at the bottom in memory of people who have died there. Some have fallen off just chasing a had that has blown off. Because the rock is round at the top you can be too far before you realize it and keep going to certain death. One tourist one day found things very hot as he was climbing so he took off his shoes and socks and climbed up in his bare feet. Well it is nice smooth rock so it is easy but because it is like ironstone and the temperature is about 45 degrees he got to the top and wondered why the soles of his feet were barbecued. They had to get a helicopter rescue team in to fly him off.

All in all, if you follow all the safety rules and don't feed the dingoes or wild dogs, watch out for snakes and scorpions you should have a fun trip. Hope your flight gets away on time. Just a note there. I remember one day it was so hot that a plane taking off from Alice Springs on route to Perth used too much fuel getting off the ground. Something about the heat and the air pressure to lift off. They had to land at Ayres Rock to refuel before continuing their journey. That is the outback for you. A Seven Week P&O Cruise

It sounds good doesn't it. Seven weeks at sea on a P & O cruise. Well it was good, however it is not quite what it seems. It all happened back in 1957 when I migrated with my family from the Uk. Not quite what you had in mind but I would still like to give you my impressions. After all, as a nine year old, impressions were exciting and lasting.

Better go back to the beginning of it all. My Mum was what they call a war bride and married my Dad straight after he returned from the war. Must have been an exciting time for them to have both survived the war and could now look forward to an exciting new life together. They migrated straight away to Australia which would have been a change from the UK where they had grown up. However, as a young couple madly in love it would have been an exciting time.

I was born shortly after they settled in Australia and my brother a bit later after that. My Mum had been involved in lab work in London as part of her contribution to the war effort at home. They were messing about with radiation of some sort and that was something they did not really understand those days. Before she was 30 she was admitted to hospital some distance away very ill. Some sort of leukemia from the lab work had got into her system and it was not long before she was dead. By the time my Dad got the phone call and had to arrange baby sitters for us two boys and arrange to borrow a car for the long drive, it was too late. He never saw his lovely bride again alive.

Must have been a devastating time for him. So much so that he packed us all up and sailed home to Scotland to be with his Mum. I was only just 6 then and can remember a little of the trip which was six weeks. I can remember flying fish landing on deck and sailing through the Suez Canal with sand on each side. Can't remember much more before that as I was obviously blocking out the tragic turn of events.

We lived with my grandmother in Scotland and I started school there before she died and my dad remarried and re-migrated to Australia. We ended up in the same town, the same street and two houses away from where we had lived before. Anyway, I can remember more of the trip back to Australia as I was nine. We sailed on the P & O ship Strathnaver which was busy ferrying migrants to Australia. This was a magnificent ship and was every bit a cruise especially to a nine year old.

The trip took seven weeks because of the scuffle that had closed the Suez Canal. We sailed round The bottom of South Africa and that took an extra week. We stopped at Capetown and I can remember the Flat top of Table Mountain. There was colorful rickshaws on the wharf taking people into the city. We weren't allowed ashore but watched the different culture from the decks. People were throwing coins over board and the young native kids would dive off the wharf to retrieve them.

We crossed the equator and King Neptune came on board and seized passengers, lathered them up and tossed them into the pool. Great stuff for a nine year old to watch. It was too hot at night to sleep so we would take our bedding up on deck and sleep under the stars. You had to wake early because they started hosing the decks a 6 am. Our cabin was way down below the water line and I spent hours at a porthole that was under water and just watched the water going past.

They had entertainment for the kids too. There was a fancy dress competition for the kids which stretched the imagine of parents because all there was available was crepe paper for costumes. I can remember being dressed in an army uniform of paper and with spots on my face. A little sign round my neck said German measel. I won second prize which was a wonderful little toy truck. The ice cream man would come round every morning handing out free ice creams. We would meet him on the bottom deck and then every deck after that. We would race back to our cabin and put our stash in the fridge and have ice cream to last all day.

The dining room was all first class and always an enjoyable experience. A couple of weeks out from Australia I fell and fractured my wrist. It was off to the ships hospital and my arm was plastered. Every meal after that I received personal attention from the waiter. He would always be there for me to cut up my meal. Really first class cruising. And with only 2 hours of school each day, us kids loved it. Sad to hear that immigration from the UK dropped off and the beautiful cruise ship Strathnaver was scrapped in the early sixties. What a waste.

Living at the Rock

Hi Guys,

This is Nick from the Rock. What rock you may well ask.

We live at Ayres Rock in the center of Australia. Or to be more correct, Uluru, or at the little resort village of Yulara. All one and the same thing basically.

Yulara is your typical company owned town. They own and run everything accept the local bank and the Post Office. They still own them too and collect rent from them as well as the medical center, child care center and other operations that all go to make up the small community.

The community is completely self contained being a long way, 450Klms., from anywhere else which is Alice Springs, the nearest town and shopping. A five hour drive away, means we don't get there very often and have to make do with the local supermarket, which is adequate, once you get used to the higher prices. Being company owned, we do get a 10% discount there on our groceries being staff.

So by being self contained means we have our own water treatment plant. The water is pumped up from the artesian basin and is very potable. It is amusing to see tourists spending hundreds of dollars on arms full of bottled water from the supermarket when the water from the tap is just as good. Still need to drink plenty of water out here as it gets to 40 degrees and more during summer. Very hot and lots of flies and many tourists walk around with fly nets on their heads. One lady wondered off over the sand dunes here a couple of years ago without enough water or head protection. She got disorientated in the heat and they found her dead next day.

We also have our own sewerage treatment plant and electricity plant. The electricity is generated using diesel fuel and is in the process of being converted to LPG gas. All communications come through the huge radio receiving tower transmitted from tower to tower over the dessert. That gives us fairly normal telephone and TV reception but can go down sometimes in a storm.

We get an occasional storm here with extreme light shows and lots of rain, although it is fairly rare and it may only rain a couple of times a year. This means it is always dry, hot and sometimes windy. You can see the windstorms coming sometimes as the sky goes red. The sand here is a red color and you have to quickly close the windows of your house and car to stop them filling up with sand.

We see lots of tourists and that is natural because that is the only reason we are here. The average stay is only the one night but there is always at least 1000 in house so the airport is very busy. Yes, we have our own airport here with six flights a day every day with hundreds of tourists arriving and leaving. The hire car companies and bus companies are always very busy. Never seen so many buses as out here. A lot of tourists arrive in Alice Springs and start looking for the rock not realizing that it is nearly a days drive away. So they have to hire a car there or take a bus trip to get here. Consequently, Alice Springs has a big tourist industry too.

We have been here four years and haven't climbed the rock yet. Almost did on a couple of occasions but the climb was closed on those particular days. It is often closed if it is too hot or windy on top. I remember one tourist recently decided it was too hot so he took his shoes off and climbed in his bare feet. The rock looks like a huge lump of ironstone and can get pretty hot in 40 degree heat. By the time this guy reached the top the soles of his feet looked and felt like they had been barbecued so he was unable to walk anymore. They had to get a rescue chopper in to get him down.

There are some plaques at the base of the rock dedicated to a few who have died there. Some have fallen off chasing hats or dropped camera to close to the edge. One guy had a dream of climbing the rock all his life and finally managed to do it when he was sixty. Just got to the top and died of a heart attack. All this means of course that we have a dedicated and well trained team of paramedics, fire crews and rescue people who can quickly assist anyone in trouble. There are many car accidents too nearby as drivers inexperienced with the long roads and frequent animals on roads come to grief. Some of the four wheel drive roads close by too get their fair share of accidents when drivers try and go too fast for the conditions.

We do see animals here apart from the normal small beasties like nasty snakes and lizards. You will often see dingoes wandering through town looking for a tasty rubbish bin to tip over and make a mess. And driving to Alice is dangerous if attempted after dark. There are lots of camels wandering the dessert and many come to grief on the highway. With no fencing, cattle are a constant threat to safe driving and of course the kangaroos at night are everywhere. Any of those can make short work of your car if you happen to hit one. We have been very lucky so far and missed them all but to be constantly alert while driving can make it very tiring.

So why are we here at the end of the earth. The average stay by staff here is about three months so we have done pretty well at four years although we have nearly had enough and looking for a change soon. The only accommodation here is company owned of course with the rent deducted from your wages and is fairly basic but comfortable.

Well, because my wife is from the Philippines and arrived in Australia with two daughters in their twenties and none of them could drive, we needed to find employment for four all in the one place. This fitted the bill so we have been here ever since. The girls have learned a trade here and we can now move anywhere but they still don't drive. One of these days. You don't really need to drive in the Philippines as the transport system is really good and cheap. But that is another story.

Holiday Tasmania

I have heard some people describe Tasmania as that place somewhere in South Africa. I think that is probably Tanzania but Tasmania is south of Australia. The most southern state and separate from the mainland of Australia by probably the roughest piece of water anywhere known as Bass Straight. That makes the trip there interesting sometimes if you choose to travel by the over night ferry.

That takes about twelve hours and is quite a luxurious trip if you go by stateroom. There is the backpackers option of dormitory accommodation down in the bowels of the ship. I remember being down there once just before we sailed and they did a watertight door testing. As they clanged shut it felt very eerie and isolated locked in below water level. There are lots of facilities on board including some nice restaurants and lounges to make the trip quite comfortable although as it sails over night and you berth in Tasmania just after breakfast, there is not much time to anything exciting. That is of course unless you strike some rough weather and big seas which can happen quite often. Then you can stand up front behind glass and watch the seas breaking right over the ship and hang on as she gets thrown about. Not much chance of sleeping anyway and probably not much chance of enjoying breakfast after a night of that.

So you finally arrive in Tasmania on the north west coast at a place called Devonport on the Mersey river. Interesting that most of the places in Tasmania are named after places in England and the climate can be very similar too. You can choose to fly if you wish with a couple of airlines providing service to several parts of the island. From there you are able to hire a car and explore as you will whereas if you come by ship you can bring your own car with you along with the heaps of freight trucks that deliver to the island. And I always tend to think that arriving by ship is a much more romantic way to start your holiday.

If you have decided to drive around the island and explore most of it you will need a couple of weeks because it is quite large. You can spend the best part of a day driving from one end to the other. The beauty is that in that day you will see a great diverse range of scenery from coastal beaches to mountain ranges with sheep grazing ranges in between. Then of course there are the other two coasts to explore with their range of towns from holiday places and rural communities to other centers based around local mining of various minerals. One such place is Queenstown on the west coast which is very rugged. You come into Queenstown from a mountain top and wind down a steep road to the town and mine site. The landscape is completely bare with all vegetation killed by mining wastes and almost seems like you are driving on the surface of the moon.

The capital of Tasmania, Hobart, is a beautiful city sitting on a vast waterway, the Derwent river, and is snuggled under Mt. Wellington which is often snow capped. For this reason it can get very cold as the wind whistles off the snow right down the main street of the city shops. Still. The locals are very resilient and love their alfresco dining outside with the fire pot burning. You can see them sitting there enjoying an evening meal rugged up in their coats and winter woollies. There is so much to see in Tasmania and many tourists visit every year enjoying the vast range of delights. There is no way I can cover it all in this short article so I will have to try and expand on the range of treats waiting for you there in a future article.
